Manuscript Synopsis

Boomer and the Butterfly

Description:

Sam is a little boy who lives with his family in the country. Prior to his birth Sam's parents bought a puppy

and named him Boomer. Sam grew up with Boomer and has known him all his life. As they grew Sam and Boomer became best friends and loved to play and explore the places around Sam's home.

It is a sad fact of life that dogs regrettably live only a few short years and Boomer is no exception. The story begins with Sam saddened by the loss of his best friend. His parents have tried in vain to comfort Sam but are grieving themselves and are at a loss as to what to say or do to help. One day Sam's grandfather comes to visit and during dinner Sam's mother convinces him to talk to Sam to

see if maybe he could help. After the evening meal he and Sam go on a walk and upon reaching a fishing pond the two sit down to remember their friend who would always follow them when they went on their walks together. After a time, Sam's grandfather tells Sam a story about a caterpillar. During the course of this story the caterpillar becomes a grand and beautiful butterfly. Upon becoming a butterfly, he learns the secret and moral to the story. The wonderful secret that he discovered and what the others didn't understand was that in the fullness of time, the part of them that was a caterpillar must first pass away before the butterfly can be born." After hearing his grandfather’s story Sam begins to feel better and as the two walk back home Sam is comforted be the possibility the Boomer might not be that far away.

Sample Reading:

As they walked down the quiet road that led away from Sam's house the golden sun sank ever so slowly in the autumn sky casting long shadows and making the trees seem as though they would burst into flames at any moment. Beautifully colored leaves, dampened by the dew, covered much of the road. They walked past freshly harvested fields of corn and hay and wild apple trees that had long given up most of their apples to Sir Isaac Newton that were now rotting on the ground. The air was full of the wonderful sights and pungent smells of autumn but Sam hardly noticed any of these things or how the gentle evening breeze would occasionally cause some of the leaves to swirl about as if magically dancing to some silent waltz that only they could hear. He walked with his head down, sometimes kicking stones into the ditch beside the road as they went along, neither one saying anything to the other. Mostly, he just thought about Boomer and how he used to follow along behind them whenever he and his grandpa took their walks.

Boomer and the Butterfly

Boomer and the Butterfly" is the delightful and inspirational tale of a little boy who must

learn to cope with the death of a dear pet. Sam's dog Boomer, has just passed away, and

Sam is finding it hard to understand why, and how he will get past such a loss. Seeing his

sadness, Sam's grandpa tells him the story of the butterfly in hopes that it might ease his

pain.

Mr. Babcock has certainly touched upon a delicate, but often pondered question. What

happens to our loved ones when they pass? As children, it is hard for us to fully grasp the

concept of death, or even life after death. In this touching rendering of the stages of life,

Mr. Babcock carefully explains the process of grief through the eyes of a little boy and

his grandpa."

"Very nice story."
