Instructor - In-School Setting
Job Title: Instructor - Elementary OR Middle School - After School Program

POSITION SUMMARY:The Instructor will be under the direct supervision of the Education Specialist and Program Director. The Instructor is responsible for providing a safe, caring, and enriching opportunity for participants enrolled within the SONYC and COMPASS Programs. The Instructor will implement a project-based learning experience, utilizing UAU’s educational and work-readiness curriculum that will help and provide participants strengthen their educational skills. The Instructor will work together with Group Leader staff to ensure the Group Leaders are providing appropriate assistance, guidance and support to the participants during periods of instruction.
** Preferred experience in either/ or: STEAM/ Visual Arts/ Literacy/ Music/ Performing Art
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):
· Implement and provide plans for program’s curriculum
· Provide evidence of curriculum development and work collaboratively with the Program Director and Education Specialist
· Assistant with the development of lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and group lessons utilizing a variation of teaching methods
· Supervise and manage groups of participants
· Translate lesson plans into learning experiences
· Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social and emotional development of students
· Facilitate a safe and productive learning environment for youth
· Create a fun and visually appealing environment for youth
· Model, enforce, teach and develop age appropriate social, physical and emotional behaviors
· Employ positive behavior management strategies for disruptive and negative behaviors
· Demonstrate positive leadership and act as a positive role model to participants
· Abide by all safety protocols as outlined by Department of Health/OCFS, DYCD and UAU
· Participate in ongoing professional development
· Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Matriculated college student or better from an accredited university or college preferred, High School Diploma or GED required
- Knowledge of a particular subject area or specialty, preferred
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with children in a classroom setting, required - preferably ages 5 years to 13 years of age
- Preferred experience in either/ or: STEAM/ Music/ Visual Arts/ Literacy/ Performing Arts
- Minimum 1 year of prior experience teaching or facilitating group activities
- Must be culturally competent - ability to understand, be sensitive to the needs of, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures
- Must pass reference checks and background
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong problem solving and mathematical skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to conduct and complete work independently
- Willing to take initiative and be flexible when needed
- Excels working in a collaborative environment to achieve target objects and outcomes
