Senior Software Engineer I, Backend

Location: Boston, MA (Hybrid – 2–3 days per week in office)

About the Role

We’re hiring two Senior Software Engineer I’s to join our Ecosystem organization at HubSpot. These engineers will work on backend systems that power our marketplace — the apps, integrations, and partner solutions that extend HubSpot for thousands of customers.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you won’t just implement tickets. You’ll take ownership of meaningful systems, operate with autonomy, and help shape how we build reliable, scalable services that other teams and customers depend on.

We’re looking for strong backend engineers who combine technical depth with product sensibility — engineers who care not only about how something is built, but why it matters.

What You’ll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs

  • Break down ambiguous problems into clear, tractable solutions

  • Own features and systems end-to-end, from design through production

  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and other engineering teams

  • Make thoughtful tradeoffs balancing reliability, performance, and customer impact

  • Improve system quality, resiliency, and developer experience

  • Mentor engineers and contribute to a strong team culture

Depending on the team, you may:

  • Build foundational systems that power HubSpot’s marketplace ecosystem

  • Develop automation and workflows that help bring products safely and efficiently to customers

  • Contribute to systems that use AI and automation to improve quality and speed

What We’re Looking For
  • 5–8 years of professional software engineering experience

  • Strong backend development experience (Java or similar object-oriented languages)

  • Experience designing and building production services and APIs

  • Ability to operate independently with minimal oversight

  • Demonstrated ownership of meaningful technical work

  • Strong communication skills and cross-functional collaboration experience

  • Clear product sensibility — you understand customer impact and business context

We especially value engineers who:

  • Can articulate tradeoffs and decision-making rationale

  • Have influenced technical direction, not just implemented requirements

  • Think beyond code and consider downstream impact

  • Care about building reliable systems at scale

Pay & Benefits

The cash compensation below includes base salary, on-target commission for employees in eligible roles, and annual bonus targets under HubSpot’s bonus plan for eligible roles. In addition to cash compensation, some roles are eligible to participate in HubSpot’s equity plan to receive restricted stock units (RSUs). Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay. Individual compensation packages are tailored to your skills, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.

Annual Cash Compensation Range:

$157,600$236,400 USD
