Supervising Librarian

Under general supervision, to supervise the adult, teen and/or children's programs, services, and staff in a community library or to supervise a program in Library Administration.<ul> <li>Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates and terminates subordinate personnel; <br />  </li> <li>Creates employee work schedules;<br />  </li> <li>Attends professional workshops and meetings;<br />  </li> <li>Participates and assists in making system policy decisions for program area;<br />  </li> <li>Gathers and conducts analysis of data for various internal library reports.<br />  </li> <li>Plans, develops, organizes, conducts, publicizes and evaluates appropriate programs;<br />  </li> <li>Familiarizes and trains library patrons in the use of library facilities and materials; assists patrons on selection of appropriate material; <br />  </li> <li>Evaluates and reviews Library literature;<br />  </li> <li>Manages collections based upon community needs using established procedures;<br />  </li> <li>Promotes reading and performs reader's advisory services;<br />  </li> <li>Answers difficult reference questions;<br />  </li> <li>Collaborates with local educational and community agencies on projects and presentations;<br />  </li> <li>Recommends materials to be purchased and purges old materials based on established criteria;<br />  </li> <li>Manages a community library in the absence of the Community Librarian to resolve routine operating problems;<br />  </li> <li>Organizes the physical interior for assigned section of the library; coordinates library displays;<br />  </li> <li>Speaks to community groups;<br />  </li> <li>Plans and develops programs for assigned section;<br />  </li> <li>Assists in the preparation of the annual budget for the County Library; allocates and monitors spending for programs;<br />  </li> <li>Oversees all aspects of a program such as , technical innovation, outreach, training, and staff development;<br />  </li> <li>Acts as a representative of the Library in providing information to computerized catalog systems to achieve compatibility with Santa Clara County Library;<br />  </li> <li>Coordinates the Integrated Library System (ILS) with circulation and information system staff and develops procedures for use in all outlets;<br />  </li> <li>Analyzes and resolves automation problems with technical information system staff;<br />  </li> <li>Performs other related duties as required.</li></ul>Possession of a Master in Library and Information Science or a Master in Library Science Degree from a graduate school accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) and one (1) year of experience equivalent to Librarian II with Santa Clara County. Supervisory or lead experience is desirable.<br /><br />Possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment, and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Driver's permit.<br /><br /><strong>Knowledge of:<br /></strong><br /><ul> <li>Principles, practices and techniques of modern public administration, with special reference to organization, personnel management, and budgetary preparation and control;<br />  </li> <li>Principles of management including training, directing, evaluating and supervising subordinates;<br />  </li> <li>Library tools, methods and procedures;<br />  </li> <li>Principles and practices of planning; organizing and implementing adult, teen, and children programs to meet community needs;<br />  </li> <li>A wide variety of reading material;<br />  </li> <li>Library reference materials;<br />  </li> <li>Principles and procedures of reference services;<br />  </li> <li>Classification and cataloging systems and principles;<br />  </li> <li>Principles and techniques of material selection and evaluation to establish balanced library collections;<br />  </li> <li>Library facilities;<br />  </li> <li>Library programs and services;<br />  </li> <li>The selection, evaluation and organization of library materials;</li></ul><strong>Ability to:  <br /></strong><ul> <li>Plan, organize and conduct programs for all ages;<br />  </li> <li>Supervise, train and evaluate subordinate staff;<br />  </li> <li>Advise and instruct patrons in the use of library facilities and reference tools;<br />  </li> <li>Demonstrate effective and tactful oral and written communications in serving a wide variety of individuals and diverse communities;<br />  </li> <li>Use library tools effectively;<br />  </li> <li>Analyze community needs and develop programs and policies to meet those needs;<br />  </li> <li>Define problems, collect and process data, and reach valid conclusions to solve problems and develop programs and procedures;<br />  </li> <li>Recommend and/or select library materials for purchase using library selection techniques;<br />  </li> <li>Make budget recommendations for program; monitor and control allocated budget;<br />  </li> <li>Analyze collection and budget to fulfill needs of the community.</li></ul>
